Medical Weight Loss
Medical weight loss has taken on a whole new level in the past few years with the use of GLP-1 agonsits like Semaglutide, brand-named drugs, as well as Tirzepatide. Multiple products were originally produced and brought to market for use in Diabetes, thus stabilizing the blood sugar and resultant excessive insulin release response. As the Mayo Clinic has pointed out, this is not a “magic wand” but rather a “second chance” for people to reapply their efforts to lose weight, often due to obesity or BMI exceeding 27.
Many people have a huge hormonal inversion once they hit a certain weight, everyone’s exact weight level or BMI for this slide is different. Once this switch is flipped, gaining weight becomes as easy as pie, pun intended. This why some gain 10-20 pounds or more then suddenly look down to see 40-50 pounds a short time later.
What can we do? How can we get this second chance at weight loss and positive weight management? Shots like GLP-1 medications mimic hormones we have for satiety and tightening our blood sugar-insulin balance. When we gain this hormone balance and efficiency, we lose excess desires for eating, snacking between meals and the feeling of being woozy or sluggish 1-2 hours after meals. This is due to the insulin spike post meal and resultant blood sugar bottoming out, getting worse as we age. This can also progress towards a metabolic syndrome/dysfunction or the ever-worrisome type II diabetes.
What weight loss steps do we recommend?
For those interested, you need to qualify by being motivated, hard-working, overweight or obese with a BMI over 27. Again, this is a second chance, not a magic wand. You need to apply your efforts with daily exercise (walking or swimming is the easiest for the heavier folks or those with bad arthritis.)
You MUST start to follow a Diet or eating schedule/program like Keto, Mediterranean or in combination with a formal program such as Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig. Also, just as always, dropping pounds is easier if you limit calorie dense foods and carbohydrates (“empty calorie killers”). Plus, remember, sugars and starches (carbs) are the number one way to spike insulin.
More successful weight loss plans limit daily grams of carbohydrates to 75 grams or even less.
The other elephant in the room is Exercise. This should be more weight-training than cardio for nearly everyone. 5 days a week, 30 minutes minimum, breaking a sweat, heart rate at an ideal fat burning level like a circuit or quick change interval lifting rotation. (Seek a personal trainer for assistance.) Walking is a great start, or swimming or biking but eventually you must start weight resistance training to gain muscle mass and optimal fat burning levels.
This is about Lifestyle Change. This is about creating a new you. The new you won’t give in to snack cakes and twinkies. The new you splurges calories on sweets like fresh fruits and salty/crunchy foods like nuts. If you can’t say good bye to candy bars and chips, you will never win this battle. There is a mind game involved here but the good news is it is winable because you start seeing faster weight loss than just diet and exercise alone. This hormone shift is the third part of the triangle.
